The Story Behind The Biz Spark
The Biz Spark is a web design and development studio based in the Niagara region of Ontario, run by a developer and a designer who happen to be married. We build fast, modern websites and brand identities for small businesses, entrepreneurs, and solopreneurs across Niagara, Hamilton, and Haldimand, and remotely for clients anywhere.
That's the short version. Here's how it started, what the name means, and how we work.
Who is behind The Biz Spark?
There are two of us: Alex and Nina.
Alex is the developer. That career started, embarrassingly enough, in a high school technology class making websites in Adobe Dreamweaver and messing around in Photoshop. It felt like a fun elective at the time, not a career path. But it stuck, and after graduating he enrolled in the Computer Programmer Analyst program at Niagara College, a step up from the standard programming stream with a co-op placement, real client work, and a final semester focused on advanced data structures and analytics. He graduated with President's Honours and was hired immediately as an applications developer.
That role turned into more than six years of full-stack work, and the range of it is the part that matters for clients. On any given week that meant maintaining a public-facing website built on Vue with an ASP.NET backend, writing backend changes against a SQL database, managing the servers hosting both internal and external sites, building reporting tools, and writing the algorithms behind systems like dynamic pricing and product recommendations. Work that measurably raised the company's profitability. For the last two years he also led the company's SEO initiative, setting the direction that moved them from the third page of Google to the first.
Nina is the designer. She studied Graphic Design at Centennial College, and that's where the foundation comes from: colour theory, typography, layout, hierarchy, the principles that separate a website that merely functions from one that actually looks like it belongs to a serious business.
Here's the part that turned two people into a studio. While Nina was in school, the two skill sets started crossing over. Alex had only ever learned design basics, so he'd watch her work through assignments and pick things up. Nina, like most graphic designers, was being pushed toward web design, so Alex helped her with Figma, and with reading and writing HTML and CSS. Somewhere in the middle of all that, the division of labour became obvious. Alex was strong on complex technical architecture. Nina was stronger on every design decision, to the point where he was regularly asking for her direction and trusting her judgment over his own. She became the design director on every project he took on.
In Spring 2024, we made it official and started The Biz Spark.

Why the name "The Biz Spark"?
It wasn't the first name we picked. For a while we were going to be Dual-Vision Studio, as in two visionaries. We were committed enough to have a colour palette chosen and a logo made: a pair of binoculars with two different coloured lenses, blue for Alex and pink for Nina. It wasn't until we started building the website and setting up social accounts that we admitted to each other that we didn't actually love it.
So we went back to brainstorming, and landed on The Biz Spark.
The "spark" is the part we fell for. Anyone who has designed or built anything knows the feeling of needing that one spark of creativity to get moving. We wanted to be that spark for small businesses and solo founders. The creative push behind building something worth looking at. And it's "Biz" rather than "Business" on purpose. We wanted the name to sound a little less stiff than the full word would have made it.
Is The Biz Spark related to Microsoft BizSpark?
No. Microsoft BizSpark was a discontinued Microsoft program for software startups. The Biz Spark is an independent web design and development studio in Ontario, Canada, founded in 2024 by Alex and Nina, with no affiliation to Microsoft or any of its programs.
What does The Biz Spark do?
Our bread and butter is web design and web development. We offer tiered packages, all of which include basic SEO, because a beautiful site nobody can find isn't doing its job.
We also work on websites we didn't build. If you already have a site and it's slow, dated, or not converting, we can improve what's there or take it through a complete redesign. That includes websites built on CMS platforms like Wix and WordPress, which we've worked on plenty of times for clients who came to us with one already running.
We also offer ongoing care plans. If you'd rather not think about your website again after launch, we handle updates, backups, and content edits, and make sure the thing stays online and working. That one is popular for a reason: most small business owners don't want to be a webmaster, they want a website that quietly works.
Beyond the web, Nina's side of the studio covers brand identity and logo design, graphic design, packaging design, custom illustration, and editorial design. We also offer social media marketing, along with analytics and reporting so you can actually see what your site and your campaigns are doing.
We also build AI solutions. That might mean adding AI features to your website or app, automating parts of your workflow that eat your week, or advising on which tools are actually worth your money and which are marketing. We test these tools constantly, so you get an answer based on hands-on use rather than a sales page.
What makes us different
You get a designer and a developer, not one person doing both jobs adequately.
Most small studios and freelancers are strong on one side and passable at the other. Every project we take on gets Nina's design direction and Alex's engineering, and neither of us is pretending to be the other.
We build on current technology, not on habit.
When we build a site from scratch, we use Nuxt on fast hosting with a quick backend, because performance and security are not optional extras in 2026. Plenty of established shops in our area still reach for the same stack they were using a decade ago. We'd rather learn new things and pass the benefit to you. That said, we're not precious about it: if you already have an existing site and it's serving you well, we'll work on what you have rather than insist on a rebuild you don't need.
We use AI deliberately, and we test it in public.
This is an unusual one. We publish hands-on tests of the tools everyone is talking about, including when they disappoint us. When we said Base44 underperformed, that was after running the same app brief through four platforms on a timer and documenting what broke. That habit keeps us current, and it means our advice is based on what we've actually used rather than what's trending.
We'll tell you when you don't need us.
Sometimes an AI website builder really is enough for what you're doing, and we'll say so. We'd rather give you an honest answer and earn the project you actually need than sell you something you don't.
Who we work with
We work with small businesses, entrepreneurs, and solopreneurs who are trying to scale. We're not sector specific. Past client work spans photographers, clothing designers, estheticians, and cleaning companies, among others.
We do our best work with people who already have some direction, meaning you know what your business is and who it serves, and you need the website and brand to catch up to that. If you're still figuring out the business itself from scratch, we're probably not the right fit yet. We also don't take large enterprise work right now, because we're a two-person studio and we'd rather do a small number of projects properly.
Where we work
We're based in the Niagara region and serve St. Catharines, Thorold, Welland, Niagara Falls, Fort Erie, and Port Colborne, along with Hamilton and Haldimand County.
We also work remotely with clients anywhere. Most of our process happens over calls and shared files regardless of whether you're twenty minutes away or across the country.
